He belonged to the Oxford movement and his style was the Gothic Revival, during the Victorian time in England. His designs predated the Anglican Church and used Catholic symbolism and liturgical functions. The Gothic period upon which his painting structure is based provided a perfect vehicle for his symbolism while retaining within its abstract structure strong links with a twentieth century spirit[2] Its construction was done in phases, with the foundation stone having been laid in 1880, in the late Victorian period. The key material used is sandstone and limestone, rather than bluestone, which is the most abundant material in Melbourne; this makes it different and unique from other Melbourne buildings of the same period.
